The incredible 600bhp Best Buy Ford Fiesta Mark 7 Rally Cross car, in Kent for the British Rallycross championship held at Lydden Hill in August has since travelled to Scotland for the penultimate round of the British Rallycross Championship.
David Binks visited our showroom in August prior to the Lydden event for an autograph session with his teammate and former World Rally Champion Marcus Grönholm and drove to third place in that weekends race, finishing behind his teammate in the Mark 7 Fiesta with our Haynes logo displayed prominently above the rear wheel arches.
The Best Buy team trekked north in September to Knockhill for what would become the penultimate round of the championship and what quintessentially was a raging British Battle; Julian Godfrey - an Englishman leading the way with a Scot his chief rival and Knockhill representing the Calcutta Cup match as the title race between the two drivers heated up.
The weather became a deciding factor in the line up for the final, Binks having a poor start off the line in the first heat and finishing 6th after a spin. Despite winning the second heat the weather had deteriorated so badly that both the results of the second and third heats made little difference to the final grid positions.
After starting 6th in the final with main title rival Julian Godfrey starting from pole Binks took his joker lap and emerged onto a clear track in third place. Sadly he was delayed behind Andy Scott in his damaged Focus for two corners and was unable to make up the time on Godfrey, eventually reaching the chequered flag in second place to the pole sitter and just two seconds behind.
David stays second in the championship in his Fiesta with one more round to go. The fight is taken to the 2.1 mile Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire on what is appropriately Bonfire Night and it should be a weekend of racing and fireworks. As they head to Croft David knows that he can score a maximum of 35 points, and currently lies just 10 points behind Godfrey. He has a mountain to climb but putting the Best Buy Ford Fiesta into the winners circle and taking fastest time of the day will put all the pressure on Godfrey.
Taking Third at Lydden Hill and Second at Knockhill, could Croft become David's First visit to the top step of the podium and could we see the Haynes logo displayed on a championship winning car ?
Quotes from the weekend:
David Binks: "It was a strange weekend. I am both disappointed and yet really happy. I am disappointed because the Best Buy Ford Fiesta was the fastest car over a single lap but we couldn’t put it together and constantly battled the weather so we didn’t get the times we deserved. I am really happy because despite our bad luck we still ended up in second place – my second podium with the new Best Buy Ford Fiesta Mk7 – and am still in the Championship hunt. It just makes me even more hungry to win at Croft!"
Andreas Eriksson (Team Manager/OMSE): "Yes, this was a hard weekend. The car was good and David drove well but you cannot do anything when the skies open as you are sitting on the grid and everyone else raced in the dry! I think David continues to learn the car and just how brutal you can be with it and is getting quicker. We need to iron out a few mistakes but we have two podiums now without luck and with mistakes. I think everyone should be pretty worried when we put it all together – which we will at Croft."
